Mothership Zeta is ‘final’ Fallout 3 DLC [update]

Friday, July 31st, 2009

It appears that Fallout 3's Mothership Zeta is the last DLC adventure for the (anti-)hero from Vault 101. MTV Multiplayer took note of the wording on Bethesda's website for the game, which states that the latest piece of content is the post-nuclear saga's "final DLC."

We're currently following up with Bethesda to see if they have called it quits on the Wasteland, which means that the next time we'll be hearing from the world of Fallout will be during our trip to New Vegas next year. Come on, Bethesda. There's still some uranium to squeeze from the glowing stone.

Update: Bethesda says "never say 'never,' but this is the last DLC we have planned."

‘Avatar’ game requires HDMI for 3D effects

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Avatar, the upcoming Ubisoft title based on the film James Cameron could not stop talking about during E3 2009 will require an HDMI port for 3D effects, leaving early Xbox 360 owners out in the cold. Luc Duchaine, senior international brand manager for the game adaptation of James Cameron's Avatar confirmed to MTV Multiplayer that a full 1080p setup will be required to play the game with 3D effects.

Although all Xbox 360 consoles are now capable of upscaling content to resolutions as high as 1080p, the Avatar game requires a native 1080p output which is only achievable through HDMI (something that is common knowledge for 3D geeks, we're told). Users with an HDMI equipped console now only need a pair of 3D glasses included with the game and a compatible 3D 1080p, 120Hz TV set! If 3D isn't an option, the game is still playable the old-fashioned way; however, the 40-minute introduction video starring James Cameron explaining the entire Avatar universe that we expect to see when the game inserted into our console will be slightly less awesome.

NHL 10 asks gamers to ‘Battle for the Cup’

Friday, July 31st, 2009
In a new producer-hosted NHL 10 trailer, EA Sports is showcasing the upcoming title's "Battle for the Cup" mode. Essentially, the mode boils down to kicking off a best-of 1, 3, 5 or 7 game playoff series from the main menu, but tweaks to the game's crowd, AI and other enhancements crank the pressure on high to perform.

Also revealed (albeit last week) was the game's "Be a GM" mode (video after the break), where players take on the role of a team's General Manager and attempt to build a dynasty over his tenure as the man in charge. With so many additions and enhancements hitting the ice in NHL 10, we eagerly await more details on what rival NHL 2K10 has in store. We totally hope they drop the gloves for our hard-earned cash.

JBO: Joystiq Box Office, July 20 – July 31

Friday, July 31st, 2009

We can't be gaming all the time, despite our best efforts, and from time to time we'll actually take advantage of the movie-playing abilities on our gaming systems. JBO features our top picks for XBL, PSN, Netflix's Watch Instantly and Blu-ray each week.

We had to skip the Joystiq Box Office last week, due to the fact that Comic-Con took over this particular writer's duties (if interested, you can see some of what went on both here and over on Cinematical). Luckily, a lot of good stuff has come out in the meantime, and we're back!

Recommendation of the Week:

Watchmen: The End is Nigh The Complete Experience (Blu-ray: $49.99 SRP): You probably figured this one was coming. What you might not have figured on is the incredibly amazing Maximum Movie Mode that this Blu-ray brings to your player. It's a great way of presenting special features, with the director giving commentary on the screen, while the movie plays behind him on one panel, with the features unfolding on the other. Sensory overload, in the best possible way. Plus, you get 25 extra minutes of footage in the director's cut, and Parts 1 and 2 of the Watchmen: The End is Nigh game. Not a bad package.

Read for the full list on a system-by-system basis just after the break. As usual, we'll see you at the popcorn st ... well, actually we won't see you at all. But you catch our drift. Plus, be sure to tell us what you'll be watching, or what you've seen recently that bowled you over.

Peep the pretty worlds of Final Fantasy XIII

Friday, July 31st, 2009

At one point we thought that Final Fantasy XIII would be lonely on our Spring 2010 calendar, but with so many delays it looks like Square Enix's big RPG franchise has some hefty competition. Good thing for Square Enix, then, that the publisher employs an army of expert designers with the ability to wow us with screens of the upcoming game's adventure.

GAME Watch has a handful of screenshots, including the three bundled above, showcasing the game's beautiful art style and reminding us of how far away 2010 really is. Seriously, it's like a year away or something. Check out GAME Watch (Translated) for more Final Fantasy XIII goodness.

Little brothers beware the Xbox Security Kit

Friday, July 31st, 2009

You know how your little brother is always totally absconding with your Xbox 360 and making an ass of himself on Xbox Live, thus banning you from teh Haloz and Gears of Warz? Well, now you can keep your console under lock and key, literally, thanks to the Xbox Security Kit from NewPCGadgets.com. Utilizing steel plates, some cable and a padlock, this baby will make sure your 360 stays put. Of course, it's only as effective as whatever you anchor it to, but we're sure you can figure something out (we suggest a Bengal tiger).

If you want one of your very own, it will set you back $30 (tiger not included).

Activision details Tony Hawk Ride’s ‘celebrity’ roster

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Though we could call the list of folks showing their faces in Tony Hawk Ride a whole mess of things, one we wouldn't call it is "celebrity." Rather than drop in famous folks like Steve-O or, umm, Wolverine, the list that Eurogamer nabbed features more actual skateboarders than anything else.

From Steve Nesser to Dustin Dollin to Mike "I beat up four dudes by myself" Vallely, the roster features little in the way of traditional Tony Hawk tomfoolery. Don't let the halfway-there hoverboard fool you, dearest reader, this is clearly a more serious skateboarding entry in the Tony Hawk game franchise. Peep the entirety of the list after the jump.

Whether you pronounce it Mothership Zeta or Mothership Zed-eta, the fact remains that the aliens are coming to cause some trouble in Fallout 3's Capital Wasteland very soon. Beyond a trailer of what to expect when Mars (Jupiter, Uranus?) attacks, there is also a developer's diary on the little details of the DLC's creation.

Rock your Avatar in Guitar Hero 5

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Earlier today, Activision announced that you can use your Xbox avatar as a playable character in game. If you want a preview of what this will look like, download the special GH 5 trailer from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. In the trailer, you’ll Xbox’s own Don Mattrick, Shane Kim, Phil Spencer and Marc Whitten take their Avatars from mild-mannered video game geeks to glam-rockin’ metalheads and “Shout It Out Loud” with a Redmond rendition of KISS. I am sure If there was a way to have your avatar as a roadie, that’s where you’d find mine with this band.

Listen to my weekly podcast when I post it this Sunday, where I’ll have the Guitar Hero 5 producer on to discuss how this avatar integration will work.

Review: King of Fighters XII

Friday, July 31st, 2009
SNK sticks to the KOF series' roots with King of Fighters XII, the latest 2D installment in its popular fighting franchise. It's been years since we've seen a King of Fighters game and you'd think SNK had some cards hidden up its sleeve but, to be honest, King of Fighters XII is short on the surprises.

[Editor's note: This review also features a video walkthrough.]

Madness: Bayonetta’s crow … is really a pig!

Friday, July 31st, 2009

We appreciate Bayonetta sound designer Daisuke Sakata's position on the project. The man spends hours sifting through sound clips from an endless stream of animals to get the scream of the game's giant crow just right. And wouldn't you know it, after going through a gauntlet of bird cries, the best sound he settled on for the giant crow was derived from the cry of a ... pig?

Seriously! "After listening to numerous different animal sounds, I would pick the ones that struck me as fitting, even if it was just a little ... as a result, I used a pig's cry as a base for this cry," Sakata wrote on developer Platinum Games' website. But don't go thinking that crow's going to sound like a porker, as Sakata heavily mixed the pig cry with a slurry of other sounds. To see the massive bird in action -- and to hear its baritone stylings -- hit the break.

Call of Duty: Classic coming to Xbox Live and PSN ‘eventually’

Friday, July 31st, 2009

It's common knowledge that those who pick up Modern Warfare 2's Hardened Edition or Prestige Edition will receive Call of Duty: Classic, the game that started it all. Then there's the option of making your own, but what if you're one of the 14 people who just want Call of Duty: Classic? Well, according to Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling (via IGN), you may have to wait a while.

"Prestige and Hardened Edition buyers will be getting access to Call of Duty: Classic first. It'll eventually be coming out for both Xbox Live Arcade and PSN as a stand-alone arcade game," he said. Bowling also confirmed that this is the full edition of the original game, including multiplayer. Activision has made no mention of what the classic will be priced at, though considering the $80 price of admission for the Hardened Edition, we're assuming the game will run you around $20. Will it be more as a standalone?

Bethesda's new publishing arm is prepared to bring the Eliza Dushku-voiced, Artificial Mind and Movement-developed Wet to retail shelves in North America on September 15. Back at E3, we thought the game showed a lot of promise, yet the experience was kind of dampened by environmental inconsistencies. It's tough to be a super badass and stylishly murder countless goons when you barely have elbow room, you know?
