PSA: Microsoft ends original Xbox support on March 2

Friday, February 27th, 2009

On March 2, Microsoft will no longer offer repair support to users of the original Xbox console. Owners who (somehow) still have an Xbox console under warranty from Microsoft will be able to participate in an upgrade offer to an Xbox 360 -- terms of which are not detailed online. Microsoft recently ended support for the big black box in Japan. Pour out a portion of that Forty folks, the Xbox is no longer supported by Microsoft. Sure, most will tell you Microsoft stopped supporting the original beast on November 22, 2005, but those people would be ... no, they'd be completely right.

[Thanks, Mustapha]

X-Blades Review

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I'm on kind of a weird sexploitation game kick this week, and second up is X-Blades. I started off with Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad, and if that thing was the proverbial hooker with a heart of gold, X-Blades is a hot virgin with a heart of incomprehensible viciousness wired to a kiloton of dynamite that's strapped to the testicles of the very Earth itself. I don't know what the hell I ever did to this game to deserve what it has handed to me, and I don't care enough to ever find out. All I want to do is run as far the hell away as possible without questions, without emotion, and without looking back. Maybe years from now, I'll be able to confront what has happened with the help of friends, liquor, and a really good therapist. But right now I just want to shut myself in a closet where I can rock back and forth for a bit and pretend that it never happened.

Alright, I'm medicated and back for a minute or two.

You know what's pretty? Bloom, lens flare, HDR, cell shading, and a mighty shitload of visual effects slathered all over PS2-era graphics representing a bunch of enemies out to get a character I couldn't care less about. Pretend that you're in the shoes of say, Paris Hilton. Or whatsername from the first season of Lost -- Shannon, I think. And then imagine you'll have to suffer a million goddamn paper cuts to keep her safe. That's pretty much the premise of X-Blades.

WWE Legends of Wrestlemania Hands-On Impressions

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Game companies come by 1UP to show off their games all the time, but it's not often that we get to compete with our on-screen avatars' real-life counterparts. But when THQ came by the office this week to give us some hands-on time with WWE Legends of Wrestlemania, they brought one of the legends with them: "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase. I got to play a few rounds with a man who could single-handedly beat the crap out of everyone in the entire office. But, while I know what Wrestlemania is, my personal wrestling knowledge is limited to seeing Andre the Giant in The Princess Bride. So I enlisted the help of art director and resident wrestling superfan Mike Cruz to help me make sense of these spandex-clad muscle men.

Justin Haywald: Mike, honestly, I haven't played a wrestling game since WWF Wrestlemania for the NES, but I know from reading Michael Donahoe's preview back in December that the controls have been simplified. Picking up the controller, it's definitely easy to jump into the game, but how would a veteran like yourself describe it?

Watchmen: The End is Nigh will be $20 on XBLA/PSN/PC

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Is it just us, or are digital downloads getting progressively more expensive? Just last summer we were reporting on why Jonathan Blow was charging $15 for Braid and now here we are less than a year later reporting what Warner Bros. Interactive told us this afternoon: The XBLA/PSN release of Watchmen: The End is Nigh next week will be dropping for 1600/$19.99 (respectively). Steam's PC release will also carry the same price tag.

The amount of visual polish that goes into a title as graphically intensive as Watchmen may justify the unusually high price tag. If the similarly priced Penny Arcade Adventures are any indication of where this series is headed, we'll be waiting a few months for a price drop before sinking into this beat-'em-up. Feel free to check out the gallery below and see for yourself why Watchmen: The End is Nigh received its luxury price.

30 Things You Need to Know About Resident Evil 5

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Over the course of the past week, I've shown you some of Resident Evil 5's boss encounters, amazingly lavish environments, and exclusive behind-the-scenes details. But now, with the game's release virtually around the corner, I compiled the notes from my extensive playthrough of the final, reviewable copy of the game to bring you 30 things you need to know about Resident Evil 5. I've made every effort to keep this list of observations spoiler-free (although I will hint at some things), focusing instead on the game mechanics and hands-on experience.

Sheva's Your Pal: She's like Yorda from Ico, but gutsier, more helpful, and wields a Magnum. She picks items up if you tell her to, and also hands you items she recognizes you'll need (like ammo for whatever weapon you're carrying). She's not totally user-controllable, but she's handy in a firefight, makes a useful mule, and does a good job staying alive. Her pathfinding is also quite adept, as she rarely, if ever, gets stuck on anything.

Guitar Hero World Tour won’t receive Lips mic support

Friday, February 27th, 2009

According to VG247, Activision has no plans to add Lips wireless microphone support to Guitar Hero World Tour. Now, we could understand their unwillingness to support the Lips mics if they were poorly constructed or if it'd be some overwhelming task to take on. But the one thing (and possibly only thing) Lips has going for it are stellar peripherals and we don't believe releasing a game patch would be all that time consuming.

Shame on you World Tour. At least Rock Band recognizes the value of colorfully lit mics.

GTA IV’s ‘The Lost and Damned’ found by many, many people

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Move over Bionic Commando: Rearmed and Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, because there's a new top earner on Xbox Live, and it's GTA IV's "The Lost and Damned". Rockstar's Xbox 360-exclusive DLC pack featuring Johnny and his crazy motorbiking buddies has set a record on the service, as its first-day sales revenue has eclipsed all other titles that have debuted on Xbox Live (note: at $20, The Lost and Damned is also more expensive than the previous record holders). Sadly, exact sales figures aren't given, so we don't know how much Microsoft and Rockstar have made off the DLC yet. When we know, we'll be sure to let you know.

GTA IV's "The Lost and Damned" DLC pack is available now on Xbox Live Marketplace for 1600.

Trivial Pursuit to allow safer family get-togethers starting March 10

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Filed under:

If you've had the extreme misfortune to attend a social gathering in which some unsavory individual busts out the unsinister-looking Trivial Pursuit board game, then you're well aware of the destructive properties that lie within that accursed box. It starts out harmless enough, but as your hollow pies continue their endless revolution around the rainbow-toned board, tempers inevitably flare. Razor-sharp question cards are flung across the table at frightening speeds. Dice are swallowed out of protest. Wedges become irrevocably lodged within eye sockets.

Fortunately, EA Hasbro will bring the game to a less tangible -- and therefore, less perilous -- format on March 10 for all the major home consoles. Wii, PS3 and 360 owners can pick it up for the reasonable price of $39.99, while PS2 owners can grab it for $29.99. It'll include a few interest-piquing gametypes, including Classic mode, a single-player mode titled "Clear the Board," and a casual, speedy "Facts & Friends" mode. Best of all, it seems the "Awkward Trip to the Emergency Room" mode has finally been removed. Huzzah!
