Microsoft has confirmed during its post- press conference /
mass console giveaway "media roundtable" that it is no longer manufacturing the original Xbox 360 hardware in any form. A Microsoft representative has told Joystiq that the now-outdated machine will continue to be sold until stock runs out, but, after that, slim is
totally in. Sure, you could get a discounted 360 before the slimmer model arrives at the end of the week -- but really, who'd do that after checking out the snazzy photos in the gallery below?

Apparently everybody was paying taxes last month instead of buying games, because despite analysts' expectations, sales for April were way down. As you can see below, sales dropped out on every single console that NPD tracked during April, with the
Wii taking the biggest hit,
down 50 percent from March. Hardware sales overall fell by 37 percent.
Software sales didn't do any better --
Splinter Cell Conviction was a bright spot and
Super Street Fighter IV just barely made the list (which you can find after the break), but otherwise it was all leftovers from March and previous months. NPD reports that last month's 11 percent industry drop-off was the "worst year-over-year decline...since July '09, and the fourth largest year-over-year percentage decline ever." The industry got rained on -- here's hoping April showers bring some May flowers.
-DS: 441K

260K (-37%)
-Wii: 277K

281K (-50%)
-360: 185K

153K (-45%)
-PS3: 181K

133K (-42%)
-PSP: 66K

54K (-44%)
-PS2 sales are no longer being tracked by NPD -- goodbye,
old friend.
See the top 10 games after the break. (Note: Sales figures for the games ranked six through ten were withheld by NPD for unstated reasons.)

Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division, the portion of the giant company responsible for Xbox operations (as well as Zune and Games for Windows) brought in $165 million in profits during the company's third quarter of fiscal 2010, which ended March 31. In the same period last year, the division lost $41 million.
The soaring profits were a result of a record third-quarter revenue haul of $14.5 billion for Microsoft, with the E&D division accounting for $1.67 billion of that total. CFO Peter Klein cited
Xbox Live as one of the factors responsible for the company's growth. In fact, Xbox Live, and the reduced cost of Xbox 360 manufacturing, helped the E&D division profit despite console shipments falling year-over-year, from 1.7 million shipments in Q3 of fiscal 2009 to 1.5 million in 2010. Tacking on to the
last reported figures, Xbox 360 shipments have now surpassed 40 million units worldwide.
With so many Xbox 360 units in the wild, Microsoft's Q3 Form 10-Q document [
.docx] brings up a very good point: "Our hardware products such as the Xbox 360 console are highly complex and can have defects in design, manufacture, or associated software." You don't say.

Last week, speculation surrounding a pending announcement of the oft-rumored, slimmed down "Valhalla" model of the Xbox 360 was kicked into high gear, thanks to
a Microsoft hiring notice for a motherboard engineer, and Steve Ballmer's reference to "
more form factors" for the hardware. Earlier today, a
Chinese tech forum purportedly posted a pair of pictures of the newly remodeled motherboard, which has undergone a massive size reduction from the current iteration of Xbox 360 hardware.
A few
noteworthy changes in the motherboard (full pictures of which can be found after the jump) are a consolidated GPU/CPU (one of the
rumored features of the Valhalla chipset), an extra SATA port, and a much smaller heatsink. Though the design could just be a mock-up from an extraordinarily talented modder, it certainly looks like professional-quality work. We've contacted Microsoft to see if they'll comment on the skinny-fied hardware.

A
Microsoft job listing reveals that the company is looking for staff to design a new Xbox 360 motherboard. From the sound of it, the new "Motherboard Design Engineer" will be helping to design further revisions of the existing Xbox 360 architecture, rather than the hardware for a
next-next-generation system. "The responsibilities of this position are focused on specifying, designing (schematic capture, PCB layout, BOM, cost analysis), implementing and verifying the mother-board and other various sub-system boards that make up the Xbox 360 product line," the job description reads.
If you're a qualified electrical engineer and want to do work that may cast you as a hero in the eyes of
many, many gamers, this is your chance. Please fix the Xbox 360 motherboard once and for all!
[Thanks @
GameAddict!]
